Parade of the 'Horribles'

A large crowd is gathered on July 4 on Lyon Street to watch the parade of the 'Horribles.' They are dressed in costume, some ride horses, and a constructed elephant stands in the middle of the street. At the left is the County Building, built in 1860 at Lyon and Kent St., the pillared house behind it belonged to Judge George Martin, built on Prospect Hill, and the Chubb house is to its right.

The 'Horribles' were also part of the July 4, 1876 Centennial Celebration, and more can be learned about them in the Photo Essay about the Centennial Celebration.
George Martin was one of the first to build on Prospect Hill, which had an elevation of about seventy feet above the river bed, and was gradually levelled over a period of about twenty years from 1870 to 1890. The cut in the hill is visible just below the Martin and Chubb homes.
