Grand Rapids Police Headquarters

1965

The Crescent St. elaborate entrance of Police Headquarters, shown shortly before it was demolished during urban renewal, is accessed by a double stairway with wrought-iron railings. Large blocks of stone finish the lower portion of the building while the upper part is of brick construction. The windows of the main floor topped by keystone arches which are repeated in the fourth floor. A window air conditioner is in the arched window farthest to the left. Atop the slate roof communication aerials can be seen. Two downspouts at either side of the building drain off rainwater from the roof. Roman numerals set into the fascade just below the highest window date the building at 1891. Cars on the street date from the time period. Portions of the original brick pavement is visible in the foreground.
