James J. Baylis looks over his stock of cigars, which were stored in the areaway beneath the sidewalk of the Morton House. Baylis wears a suit and what appears to be a bowler hat.

The photograph, may have been taken by the Evening Press photographer, as it is a close-up of the same photograph that appeared in the March 17, 1906 paper, and seen at the right under Related Items. James Baylis was born in London on August 9, 1853. The family immigrated in 1869. Baylis was employed as a bartender along with his brother, Henry, at the Morton House around 1881. Later James J. Baylis owned the cigar store and newsstand in the Morton House. He died May 9, 1915, and is buried in St. Andrews Cemetery.
