Looking West on Monroe Ave. during the Centennial Celebration
1876
In the foreground at the left is a gas streetlamp, horses and wagons line both sides of Monroe Ave., arches of one of the Centennial structures can be seen in the distance spanning the avenue, and at the end of the street is Sweet's Hotel which many years later would become the Pantlind Hotel. A sign on the building at the left identifies Brummeler & Brink Grocers who were located at 117 Monroe, farther down a large sign for Teas identifies Barney & Loomis at 108 Monroe, and a sign near the roof on a building, also on the left, advertises McCord Boots & Shoes at 86 Monroe. Many of the buildings show awnings unfurled against the sun and several flags are flying from buildings in honor of the celebration.
