Police Department "Riot Squad"

J. H. Poisson - 1911

Police officers line up in front of the Ottawa vehicle entrance to police headquarters. Behind them is a patrol vehicle. The officers left to right: Lyman Wilson, listed as autocop, stands next to his Indian motorcycle, Ray Sprague, Charles Hoar, Sam Slater, John Murphy, Cornelius Steenport, William Stead, Walter Douglas, John Lempka, Charles Wakemuth and William Lennon with his Indian motorcycle. Officer Stephen Hurd who drives horses that pull the city ambulance is behind Wilson, Ray Musselman driver of the patrol wagon, George Spring stands on the running board, and Charles Hunt at rear. Court officer Bill Tatroe stands to the right of the door. The two building materials, stone and brick, are visible. Three windows on the second floor have striped awnings. Carved letters over the entrance identify it as Police Patrol. One of the downspouts is at the right of the large door. The headline from the article in the August 17, 1911, Grand Rapids "Daily News" has been pasted to the bottom of the photo.
