Hong Ying Lo Restaurant Exterior

Murch Morris - 1920s

This view of Campau Square shows the Pantlind Hotel on Monroe Ave. at the left half of the photo, and the Hong Ying Lo Chinese American Restaurant, which was on the second floor of the building, at the corner of Monroe Ave. and Pearl St. The Powers Opera House was to the right of the restaurant and outside the photo. A portion of the Grand Rapids Savings Bank can be seen in the distance between the hotel on the left and the restaurant building on the right. In front of the restaurant and near the corner is a small white building which provides free tourist information (possibly what was referred to as The Hut). To its right is the Fox Jewelry Store, a business that still exists but at a different location. A delivery truck from the Lincoln Park Dairy is parked on Pearl St., and many cars of the 1920s vintage are on the street. Trolley tracks are visible in the brick-paving, and an island for waiting passengers is in the middle of the street to the left of the cars.
