Clara was the daughter of Charles C. Comstock and his second wife, Cornelia Guild Davis.

The back of the photograph provides the name of the photographer, Horton's Art Gallery, Monroe St. Grand Rapids, Mich. This was the studio of O. W. Horton, one of the city's earliest photographers.
