Bonne Magique

Bonne Magique

Orville Bulman - 1964

In this Barque painting, titled Bonne Magique, Bulman was making an historic comment on the Civil Right Act, which passed in 1964. On the right side of the barque, in small letters, are the words "Droit Civil" or Civil Rights. The painting depicts two women and a child on the right; one holds an upbrella and the other a basket of fruit. Two chickens are at the center of the boat, and a man, wearing a striped shirt and hat, who is steering the boat sits on the left.
