Overlooking Downtown Grand Rapids
Schuyler C. Baldwin - 1898
City Hall, center left, with its clock tower rising just above the horizon, and the County Court House and its tower at center right dominate the turn-of-the-century landscape of downtown Grand Rapids. The large building immediately to the left of the court house is the Nelson Matter Furniture Factory. At the left edge of City Hall is the eastern wall of the Michigan Trust Building; what appears to be the Waters Building, possibly still under construction, is seen at the right edge of City Hall. The building at the right edge with the double gables is probably a Masonic Building.

Notes | Because the Waters Building was initially built at five floors, soon to be six, the building in the photo appears to be too short. This might be an image of the Waters Building still under construction, which would date the photo to about 1898. |
