Schuyler C. Baldwin - 1880s

The view looks southwest toward the downtown area and the Grand River. Recently built houses in the foreground occupy the area at the foot of Reservoir Hill, and Ionia Ave. is visible just below the first row of houses. The street that runs diagonally across the bottom of the photo is Taylor Street.

Houses situated at the bottom of Reservoir Hill now face the hill along newly created Taylor Street. Boardwalks line the side of the street, and fences run along the front of the houses. The photo in Related Items at the right shows the area before the reservoir above broke on September 2, 1880 and destroyed the houses and many other buildings in the Ionia, Ottawa, and Mason Street area. The two photographs were shot from the same area and it is possible to locate some of the buildings in both pictures. From a collection of photographs depicting Grand Rapids around 1872, previously owned by Charles E. Belknap, author of "The Yesterdays of Grand Rapids" and longtime resident of the city.
