Lovett's Block, Corner of Canal and Pearl

The four-story building, plus basement, stood at the northeast corner of Canal and Pearl for decades. As can be seen by the signs, it was home to a variety of businesses from insurance, printing, and cigar manufacturing. Two horse drawn carriages stand at the edge of the boardwalk on Canal St., and a gas light is at the corner.

Notes	Title by cataloger. The photograph is dated by the Houseman & Mainzer (William Houseman and Simon Mainzer) shop at 37 Pearl, which lasted a short time. John Bole, on the other hand, began his printing business at this location in 1857. From a collection of photographs depicting Grand Rapids around 1872, previously owned by Charles E. Belknap, author of "The Yesterdays of Grand Rapids" and longtime resident of the city.
