Plank Road

Plank Road

1905 ca.

Calvin Stanton, seated on the left with Dewey Stanton at his side, drives his horse and buggy on the plank road. Paul Faulkner, at the far right, wears knickers, knee-high stockings, and high-top boots. A large brimmed hat provides protection from the sun as it does for those in the buggy. Puddles are from a recent rain, but a shadow of the wheel spokes on the center planks indicate the sun is shining. The area adjacent to the road, which appears to be slightly raised, has dense vegetation with conifers in the background.

Notes

Title by cataloger. Date of the photo was determined by the census and birth records showing that both Dewey Stanton and Paul Faulkner were born at the turn of the century. The plank road was between Delton and Cedar Creek in Barry County. The photograph of the Barry County plank road has been used rather than a more local image because of its clear depiction.
