Grand Rapids High School Football Team

C. E. Heath - 1900

The photograph of the football team from Grand Rapids High School, also known as Central High School, was probably taken in celebration of the Thanksgiving Day win over their main rival, Detroit High School, with a score of 23-5, in a game played at Recreation Park located at Division and Cottage Grove. G.R.H.S. Foot-Ball Team 1900 is at the top, Thanksgiving runs down the left, and Foot Ball 1900 down the right. The players' names listed at the bottom are:
back row l. to r.: Walker, Cook, Morton, Clay, Palmer, Freuh; center row: Kusterer, Beneker, White, Coach Dayrell, Captain Forbes, Dykema, Terrien; front row: Crossman, team manager Haugh, Sweet. Photo by Heath is in the bottom right corner. The players wear several different types of sports clothing, but three wear dark turtleneck sweaters with a logo, which appears to be a 'G' combined with an 'R'. The player Kusterer, seated at the far left, wears shin guards and the style of pants and football shoes can be seen on several players.
