Market Street and Monroe

1880

The Omnibus in front of the Eagle Hotel on Market St. used to carry patrons to and from the depots and, in the early days, to and from the boat docks on the Grand River. Just beyond the tall building next to the Eagle Hotel is a competitor, the Rathbun House that fronted on Monroe. The building with the striped awnings, at the head of Market where it meets Monroe, was occupied by Sears, Roebuck & Co. in later years, but was torn down in 1968-69. Note the old gas lamps and the foot ramps in the foreground over the open gutters.
