Monroe Mall During Construction

Jack Ropoleski - 1979

The view looks southeast up Monroe Ave. toward Division Ave. during construction of the Monroe Mall. The road surface has been removed to prepare for the paving of the mall. At the left is the lower portion of the McKay Tower, farther up the street the sign for Old Kent Bank, which was located on the lower level of the Morton House at the corner of Ionia St. The tall building cutting off the lower part of the Old Kent Sign is Steketee's Department Store. The large sign with the letters "MN," for Michigan National, stands atop their bank building, also at the corner of Ionia. The steeple at the far end of the street belongs to Westminster Presbyterian Church located between Jefferson Ave. and Lagrave St. at Weston.
