Alvah and Ella Brown

B. D. Jackson - 1890s

Alvah Brown, owner of the Browning Hotel, and his wife Ella sit in a horse-drawn carriage. The exterior of the carriage and its wheels are covered with paper flowers. Alvah Brown wears a top hat and velvet-collared coat while Ella wears a large hat with feathers and a coat with puffed sleeves, a typical fashion of the time. Ribbons are tied to the harnesses and around the forelegs of the horses. The store at the left belongs to a cigar manufacturer, Ernst B.F. Wessel, located at 261 1st St.
