The Grandville Record, 12/28/1916, page 3, reported: "Charles E. Bedaux, a production engineer of Grand Rapids, has perfected a new device to be installed upon any telephone, which will record all phone numbers that try to call during the owner’s absence." Bedaux filed his patent, 1,259,591, for a Call-Recording Apparatus for Telephones, on September 25, 1916; the patent was granted March 19, 1918.
